If you feel like your mind never switches off…

You’re not alone.

Overthinking is one of the most common struggles people face today.

It can show up as:

  • replaying conversations
  • worrying about the future
  • going over things you said or did in the past
  • analysing every decision
  • struggling to relax

The good news is you can learn how to stop overthinking.

Why you overthink everything

Overthinking isn’t random.

It usually happens when your mind is trying to:

  • stay in control
  • avoid mistakes
  • protect you from uncertainty

This can mean worrying about the future…
or going over the past again and again, thinking about what you said or did.

But instead of helping, it keeps you stuck in a loop.

The more you try to “figure everything out”…
the harder it becomes to switch off.

Signs you’re overthinking

You might notice:

  • going over the same thoughts repeatedly
  • replaying past conversations or situations
  • struggling to make simple decisions
  • feeling mentally exhausted
  • finding it hard to relax

If this sounds familiar, your mind is overloaded not broken.

How to stop overthinking

Interrupt the loop
Overthinking feeds on attention.
Try changing your environment, moving your body, or focusing on something physical like your breath.

Get out of your head and into your body
Overthinking is mental — calm comes from the body.
Go for a walk, slow your breathing, or notice your surroundings.

Stop trying to solve everything
Not every thought needs an answer.
Let thoughts pass instead of engaging with them.

Reduce mental overload
Too much input keeps your mind busy.
Cut down on scrolling, noise, and constant information.

Create moments of calm in your day
Don’t wait until you feel overwhelmed.
Even a few minutes of calm each day can make a big difference.

Why it feels so hard to stop

Overthinking becomes a habit.

Your brain gets used to analysing, predicting, replaying the past, and trying to control the future.

So when you try to stop, it can feel unnatural at first.

That’s normal it gets easier with practice.

What actually helps long term

Quick tips can help in the moment.

But long term, you need a way to:

  • calm your system
  • feel more grounded
  • step out of constant mental activity

When your body feels calm, your mind follows.

A simple shift

Instead of asking:

“How do I stop thinking?”

Try asking:

“How do I feel calmer?”

You can also try to name the thought when it shows up.

For example:

  • “This is me overthinking”
  • “This is an anxious thought”
  • “This is in the past — it’s gone”

This helps create a small distance between you and the thought.

It becomes something you notice, rather than something you get pulled into.

It’s also important to remember:

Thoughts are just thoughts.
We all have them.

They don’t mean much on their own —
they only start to matter when we act on them or give them too much attention.

If you’re tired of being stuck in your head, this is something you can learn.

If your mind often feels busy or hard to switch off, learning how to calm your system can make a real difference.
