Have you ever spent time with someone and walked away feeling completely drained?

Not just tired…

But mentally and emotionally exhausted.

If that’s happened to you, you’re not imagining it.

Why this happens

Some interactions take more energy than others.

This can happen when:

  • someone is highly negative
  • they rely on you emotionally
  • you feel like you have to manage their mood
  • you’re doing more listening than being heard

you’re picking up on someone’s energy, energy that isn’t yours to take

Over time, this builds up.

It’s not just in your head

Your body and mind are constantly responding to what’s around you.

When you’re around stress, tension, or emotional intensity…

You feel it.

Especially if you’re naturally aware of others or tend to take things on.

Signs you’re being affected

You might notice:

  • feeling tired after certain conversations
  • needing time alone to recover
  • overthinking what was said
  • feeling low or heavy for no clear reason

These are signals not weaknesses.

Why some people feel this more than others

Some people are naturally more aware of what’s going on around them.

You might:

  • pick up on other people’s moods
  • feel responsible for how others feel
  • struggle to switch off after interactions
  • Carry too much empathy

This isn’t a flaw.

It just means you need a better way to manage your energy.

The important part most people miss

Feeling drained around someone doesn’t always mean something is “wrong” with them.

And it doesn’t mean you need to avoid people completely.

It usually means:

👉 you haven’t been shown how to stay steady in those situations

A small shift that helps

Start by simply noticing.

Instead of pushing the feeling away, recognise it:

  • “I feel drained after being around them”
  • “That conversation took a lot out of me”

This awareness is the first step.

Because once you notice it, you can start to respond differently.

Why this keeps happening

If nothing changes, the same pattern repeats.

You keep:

  • giving your energy away
  • feeling affected by others
  • needing time to recover

Not because you’re weak…

But because no one has shown you another way yet.

If you often feel drained around others, this is something you can learn

Learning how to stay calm and steady around different people makes a huge difference.

In my 1-day Reiki training, I teach simple, practical ways to:

  • feel less affected by others
  • stay grounded in everyday situations
  • manage your energy more confidently
  • feel more like yourself again
